Obituary

Lt. Col. (Ret) Cornell "Mack" McKenzie, 62, of Springfield, Virginia, passed on March 16, 2017, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. He was born on August 7, 1954.

He attended Riverside High School. Upon graduation from Riverside, "MACK" attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He graduated on June 2, 1976. "MACK" was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He then began a lifetime of service in the United States Army

"MACK's" first assignment was Fort Polk, Louisiana where he served as a Platoon Leader in the 5th Signal Battalion and attended the advanced course in Augusta, Georgia for six months. In 1979 "MACK" was transferred to Fort Riley Kansas, where he had a number of jobs ranging from Battalion Motor Officer to Company Commander and Brigade Civil Engineer Officer. In August of 1983 "MACK" attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California where he received his Masters Degree in Operations Research Systems Analysis in 1985.

"MACK" worked at the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Personnel Policy Analyst, Force Assignment Plans and Analyst Division and Director of Military Personnel Management. "MACK" then transitioned to Fort Belvoir where he was an Instructor at the Army Management Management Staff College. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he served as Battalion Executive Officer for three years before transferring back to the states

"MACK" served honorably in the United States Military for 23 ½ years and retired in December of 1999. During those military years, "MACK" was awarded the following: Legion of Merit/ Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award) Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award) Army Achievement Medal/ National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award) Army Service Ribbon/Overseas Service Ribbon/ Parachutist Badge/ Army Staff Identification Badge.


"MACK" began his second career at SAIC where he held a variety of positions including, Chief Studies Analysis and Database Branch and Program Manager. He worked at SAIC for 13 years. He also worked at Engility Corporation where he served as Senior ORSA, Damo-CIA until his retirement due to his illness.


"MACK" is survived by his loving wife Lauretta (Laurie), to whom he was married for forty glorious years; two daughters: Kimberly (Gregory), Devin (Eric), and one son: Jeremy. He also leaves behind his parents: MacDonald and Mary McKenzie, both of Micanopy, FL; four sisters: Rose Morgan and Cheryl Waters both of Sarasota, FL, Charlene Dunnum of Gainesville, FL, Mildred White of Bradenton, FL; one brother, Freddie McKenzie of Sarasota, FL; two grandchildren: Henry and Ira Gillette both of Broadway, VA; and his brother in law, Richard McDuffie of Fairfax, VA, a host of cousins, nieces, nephew, aunts and uncles.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 23, 2017, from 11am until 12pm, with funeral services starting at 12 pm at Antioch Baptist Church, 6531 Little Ox Road, Fairfax Station, Virginia, 22039. Rev. Dr. Marshal L. Ausberry, Sr., will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will be at held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, 1pm, at Arlington National Cemetery.
